The 4th National Insurance and Actuary Congress was held in METU

National Insurance and Actuarial Congress that has been held every two years since 2013 is held for the 4th time this year. The congress where academicians, sector stakeholders, regulatory and supervisory institutions experts discussed the latest research topics and needs in the field of insurance and actuaries was hosted by Middle East Technical University on 24-25 June 2019.

The 4th National Insurance and Actuarial Congress organized by METU Institute of Applied Mathematics and Actuaries Association was held on 24-25 June 2019 at METU Congress and Culture Centre with almost 800 participants. The congress where the sector was elaborated started with opening speeches of the Head of the Department of Financial Mathematics and Actuary Departments of the Middle East Technical University Prof. Dr. Sevtap Kestel, the Chair of Actuaries Association Taylan Matkap, President of International Actuaries Association Gábor Hanák, Deputy Undersecretary of Treasury and Finance Prof. Ahmet Genç and METU Rector. Dr. Mustafa Verşan Kök.

The program continued with the speech of Prof. Dr. Burak Saltoğlu from Boğaziçi University with the title of “Recent Developments in Financial Risk Measurement”. Professor Dr. Burak Saltoğlu stated the effectiveness of existing methods against future crises in the financial industry and new model trends in the academic world in his speech. The President of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance Insurance Supervisory Board Mete Güler, Allianz Insurance CFO Ersin Pak and KPMG Global Company Partner Mary Trussell attended the panel with the title of IFRS17 moderated by KPMG Partner Sinem Cantürk. The importance of the IFRS17 process for insurance companies, their impact and the importance of actuaries in this process were emphasized.

Afternoon session moderated by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yakut started with the participation of TARSİM Deputy General Manager Zeki Karakurt, DASK Deputy Secretary General Bilal Türkmen and RS Service Chairman Ünal Ünaldı with “Catastrophic Damages and Climate” panel. Speeches were on the subjects of agricultural insurance in Turkey, the TNCIP insurance rate and work planned for the future periods, its effect on hail damage and automobile industry and planned accreditations. The program then continued with a presentation on machine learning in insurance by Chris Holiday and Anıl Gülveren from Willis Towers Watson. Fraud detection, text data mining examples from machine learning applications were emphasized and it was explained that machine learning enabled to produce more effective models in less time.

The first day of the congress was ended with the “Non-Life Insurance” CEO Panel moderated by Mehmet Kalkavan Director of Turkish Insurance Institute Foundation. Atilla Benli, CEO of Güneş Sigorta, İlhami Koç, CEO of Anadolu Sigorta, Yavuz Ölken CEO of Axa Sigorta and Yıldırım Türe CEO of Ergo Sigorta answered the questions on the false facts of the insurance sector and gave career advices to the young willing to choose this profession in the future through their own experiences.

During the final day of the congress,  “Digital Transformation in Insurance Sector” moderated by Ernst and Young Partner Damla Harman took place with the participation of Insurance Information and Surveillance Center Manager Murat Hakseven, the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, General Directorate of Insurance Uluç İçöz and Ernst and Young Director Will Mirams. After the coffee break, “Regulation and Law” session moderated by Verda Law Managing Partner Nafiz Özgür Rifaioğlu was held with the participation of Bahçeşehir University Lecturer Dr. Evrim Akgün, Ebru Gençosmanoğlu from General Directorate of Insurance and Özgür Öntürk Vice President of Insurance Supervision Board and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.

The congress was finalized with “Life Insurance and Pension” CEO Panel moderated by Prof. Dr. Coşkun Küçüközmen from İzmir Ekonomi University. Garanti Emklilik CEO Burak Ali Göçer, Fiba Pension CEO Erol Öztürkoğlu, NN Hayat ve Emeklilik CEO Marius Popescu participated in the panel.

In addition, young talents were ensured to attend to the congress by organizing a poster competition for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Program was closed after the Poster Competition Award Ceremony.
